Had I been on the field, I would have been within earshot of his explanation to the coaches. Once I realized he interepreted the rules wrong (and not just made a poor judgement call), we would have corrected it (and no, I'm not in the camp of overruling my partner's JUDGEMENT calls).
However, I was not on the field, and not an umpire for this contest. I can't tell you how hard it was to not say a word. |

Similar situation in "IF" game bottom of 7th home trailing 3-2 18U ASA Rec Tournament, play took place between 1B and 2B.
I am PU, there was contact between R1 and F4 fielding the ball, BU signals OBS, 2 runs score and game over. To me it looked like INT. No way that PU from 65+ feet away looking straight on can see what BU saw from side 12 feet away, I refuse to comment on call because I couldn't see what BU saw. I feel it is a disservice to fellow umpires to comment on judgement calls where you do not have the same view. Rule interpertation byes, but not judgement because we have different pictures in our memory. JMHO
