This was a big arguement in my league and I want some people to understand. The banned bats to me as a pitcher is for this reason and to me only this reason. I have no problem putting better bats in home run hitters hands. To me thats not the issue. A home run hitter in a 4 homerun limit league is going to hit it out with any bat. The guy that bothers me is the 150-180 pound guy that has 100+ bat speed swing that is trying to buzz the tower. Banned bats are for safty please people understand that. I have played super B softball for 15 years now and good hitters dont need to come up the middle to get a base hit. Its the guys who dont know better that end up killing a pitcher. I had a problem with a player last night in our game. Our league has banned all composite bats and he was using his senergy 2 which is not banned by ASA. I tried to tell him that it is for safty reasons and told him that if he pitches and lets us use composite bats that I would let him use his. Boy did he stop in his tracks. Well Please let me know what you think of my post and other pitchers out there let me know how you guys feel. Scotty B

Since you asked, parts of your post are only semi-coherent and not well composed. This is an UMPIRE board, so I don't know if you will receive any sympathy here I think you are partially wrong. Guys playing with a 4-HR limit are NOT as skilled as you believe. Even the guys playing with the 12-HR limit occasionally mis-hit the ball and it goes up the middle. Banning particular bats is a safety issue for ALL players, not just the pitchers. Fielders at the corners are still pretty close, but those who are definitely in as much danger as the pitcher are the runners at the corners. Granted, a pitcher begins much closer, but s/he is allowed to move. A runner is required to maintain contact with the base until the ball reaches the plate. That gives them little time to move and when they do, it is not to the rear as most pitchers tend to bail. Also, runners do not have the equipment with which to deflect or stop the ball.

No ASA banned bats should be allowed in ASA Play.
I dont even know where the debate is or will be on this. It seems you are discussing local rules also - so thats what you have and your umps should be enforcing that. I wouldnt lose any sleep if these big time bats were banned in all youth rec league play either... but I guess the point of your thread is no banned bats should be allowed??? .. so if thats the case, I agree with you and enforce that. |

I believe the point of his post was to try to get us to say that Non banned bats that are made of composite material should be thrown out as well. As far as that goes the associations make the rules that we are to enforce. The Synergy 2 is legal in all associations including the newer stricter ASA bat standard thus should and will be allowed. If you have a local rule that bans all composites then the local umpires should have a list from your associations directors of which bats to allow or not allow and not just make a blanket statement and expect the blues to take the heat for it. IMHO of course.
