Can the FLEX sub in to run for the DP freely? Here is what happened in our game today:

DP reached base twice and each time, the FLEX ran for them after they reached base and the DP came back to bat each time. Just trying to figure out if this was legal.

That was legal to a point.

When the FLEX ran for the DP, the DP left the game. When the DP came to bat the next time, she used her re-entry rights. When the FLEX ran for the DP the second time, the DP left the game again, and was done for the game.

The next (third) time the DP is due up, the coach has two choices: he can either leave the FLEX player in on offense to bat for the DP, or he can bring in an eligible sub for the DP.

What he can't do is have the player who started at the DP position re-enter yet again. She's done.

How did those Michigan Trolls handle it, Stat-Man?

Mick:

DP got on base twice (out of 4 times at the plate). The two times she got on, the opposing coach would announce FLEX was running for DP.

The next time DP was due up in order (after each time the FLEX ran for her), DP batted without reporting back in. (I even wondered if that was legal too)

Without trying to read the umpire crews' mind, it seemed to me like they were treating the FLEX as if she could be used as a CR for the DP.

I did ask our coach if she wanted to ask the Umpire about this, but she didn't want to be seen as a booger-picker. Monday, I'll be sure to educate her and tell her it might have been worth it

Hmm, I see that in the 2004 Softball Interpretations, Situation #11 covers this exact scenario. Guess I'll add this to my DP/FLEX learning materials
