I don't know how long ago it has been since you played, but I think it is an interesting sociological point that one often hears that people today are not taking responsibilities for their own actions, always trying to find others to blame, e.g. the "burned by hot coffee from McDonald's" law suit. And this example you give would seem to state a similar change of trends on the field, too.

Does softball imitate life or does life imitate softball?
