NCAA Leaving early

Recent Ole Miss game. Runner at first called out for leaving early on a pitch that was hit out of the park.

Clear delayed dead ball signal.

Runner called out but home run was counted.

Call made at the conclusion of the play.

Correct in NCAA???

NCAA Softball: Leaving early is a Delayed Dead Ball.

AND the defense has the option to take the result of the play OR it is "no pitch" and the runner is called out. I strongly doubt the home run was allowed to stand.

Can you tell me which game this happened in? I was looking through box scores and don't see anything about it.

Not Ole' Miss. It was Arkansas and Miss State.

Close Call Sports documented the play and the ejection (mostly the ejection).

The article says the runner was out and the batter returned to bat.

That's not the one I was was referring to. I believe Auburn was the other team but cannot find the play.

Found it in the box score.

J. Lassiter out at first 1b unassisted, runner left early.

P.Smith grounded out during the next at bat.


So apparently there were multiple games with a player called out for leaving early involving teams from Mississippi. The above mentioned Miss St - Arkansas game with the wild ejection and hopefully an equally wild suspension for the coach, and Ole Miss vs Auburn. The difference was the Ole Miss leaving early did not happen on a home run, but rather a double off the wall.


From the Ole Miss athletic website recap.
"Looking to answer in the fourth, Lassiter reached on a leadoff walk. The very next play, Smith doubled off the wall but after a discussion, the runner at first left early, offsetting the play. Smith was put back at the plate with one out at was retired along with Allee to end the wild inning."

This means the defense did take the option to call the runner out, rather than the result of the play.
