Bluezebra's got it.
We'll often allow fielders (including the pitcher, if it's not distracting) wear something over their jerseys... but the batter's number has to be showing, especially in a tournament.

Years ago, I use to get them going as soon as possible and then came the constant complaining about the slippery bases and slick outfield. Then comes the turned ankles and knees along with the pulled groins. It just isn't worth it and I really don't care what the players want in those circumstances. The game is a seasonal sport and should be played "in season". JMHO,
