Advice?Let someone else do it? In some ways a thankless job. I did our local ASA and NY High School softball for a couple of years. Not fun when you'd get last minute calls from an assigned umpire and you try to get a body for the game. Didn't have a large pool of qualified umpires from which to draw. If it was a "big" game, I'd switch a good ump over and put the last minute sub on a lesser contest. I know what you're thinking, but you have to do what you have to do.
