Legal delivery?
When you log into the USA Softball site, there are some pictures that scroll by on the main page.
I was looking at the picture of the female lefty pitcher. I really cannot see a pitcher's plate in the photo. If, however, I assume that her pivot (left) foot is in contact with the plate, it seems as though her other foot is too far back to be in contact with the plate. Do they play under a different rule set that would allow that? Thanx. PS: If someone knows how to post that picture to this site, that would be most helpful.

This is video of her pitching a while back. She does what I believe they refer to as a "gym step", she steps forward with her pivot foot prior to delivery. As far as I know its not legal in any rule set. Question is, will anyone actually call it because apparently they dont so far.

Yes, this was Team USA try out/selection camp. WBSC rule change this year (Aug 2017) that allows only the pivot foot to be in contact with the pitcher's plate. The rule was changed after a lot of difficulty and illegal pitches at the Men's WBSC championship this summer; the rule (for both men and women) had both feet in contact. To be clear, the current WBSC pitching rule is one foot one, hands come together and motionless for 2 seconds, leaping is allowed as long as the release happens on the landing. See 4.3.1 and this bulletin. BTW, the 20 second clock is strange, and an umpire assignment for each game. Last edited by Big Slick; Tue Jan 09, 2018 at 11:54am. |

As long as there is an umpire on the corner, it is relatively easy to see.
