safety base q
High school fast pitch rules:
Batter bunts the ball out in front of the plate. Catcher fields the ball & throws to first baseman who has to stretch into foul territory and only makes contact with her foot on the safety base. Is batter-runner out or safe? (Batter-runner ran legally to first). Thanks in advance |

I don't have my book handy, but I think the runner would be out (assuming throw beat the runner), if the umpire rules the throw took the defensive player into foul territory.
The reason is simple. The safety base is their for safety. It is not safe for the defensive player to be stretching across the base for the white portion if she has to go into foul territory to make the catch. Stretching across the base is why we have the safety base rule in place, to prevent it and the associated injuries. |
