Softball

batted ball is hit in the air in front of pitchers mound, ball is never touched
ball rolls backwards towards catcher who lets it roll toward backstop is this a
foul ball?

assuming the backstop is in foul ground

and the ball settles there.

Yep. Foul ball

What if it had touched pitchers plate as it rolled back toward foul ground? If nobody touched it, would it still be foul?

While acknowledging that Cecil was kidding around, I defend his comment based on two things:

1. The OP never said the ball struck the backstop, and
2. Therefore, until it "settles", it is possible (in a TWP sort of way) for the ball to spin back into fair territory without being touched.
