Went to a Fort Myers Miracle game last night, class A Florida League. They are using a clock on pitchers and batters, but no balls or strikes were assessed during the game. It had to help move it...

I agree on good call/no call. That's why the "easily caught" is there in the rule.

Advice?Let someone else do it? In some ways a thankless job. I did our local ASA and NY High School softball for a couple of years. Not fun when you'd get last minute calls from an assigned umpire...

I believe New Jersey is going that way too. How many schools have TV cameras set up to even make it possible?

All goes to show you that "goofy" things can happen at any level of ball. This is something you'd be more likely to see in a lower level JV game. When it does your brain says, "what the hell was...

Thanks again for the info. Most likely it was some sort of administrative thing. They did still have a jump ball to start play. Could have been that pre-game dunking, I notice that they really don't...

I have a new part time job on the event staff at the arena on the campus of Florida SW College. Before last night's men;s game tipped off, they were awarded a foul shot. No announcement was made as...

intentional walk rule for 2018

Although I am officially retired from umpiring, I like to see what is going on. I see that the Federation now allows an automatic intentional walk. I was talking to a couple people the other day and...

Funny that I stopped in to check this place. Back when I was UIC in central NY, I was involved in a protest in men's fast pitch on this very topic. Umpire making the call called it a foul ball and a...

Didn't know anyone do that these day? Back when I was playing freshman football at Maine, we had a guy who did drop kicks for kick offs, extra points, and field goals. He was pretty good at it as I...

World Series call/no call discussion

I thought last night's safe call on the runner going to home was pretty bad. If that's not running out of one's base path, nothing is. I bet the PU wishes they could see it again/take it back. The TV...

I'm happy with becoming a spectator. I hear you about trying to teach new umpires. Too many never seem to improve nor even care about it. Then they wonder why they don't get the "better" games.

knowing when to hang 'em up

I've umpired on and off (mostly on) since 1958 when I called college fraternity intramural games. I've worked with older umpires over the years and with some that needed to retire. Most of the time I...

Interesting. Never heard of such a thing. I avoided any between inning meetings even with 2 man crew. Not moving when requested was not very professional.

Really? A possible safety concern? Really?

What I'm still wondering is why the masks worn by defensive players haven't come under the codification of NOCSAE or the Federation.

I am of the belief that eliminating testing will make for low ability umpires.
In fact, I always thought it would be good to have annual testing, not only on rules, but also on mechanics.

Been away from ASA slo-pitch for years now. Never knew about any games where base stealing was allowed. The base runner sure was a "good sport" for not just throwing it into the outfield and scoring.

The mat. The local leagues back in CNY wanted it, because they thought it would make more constant ball/strike calls by mostly incompetent local umpires. I hated it. It was at its worst in the...
