"serious" foul by offended team during their advantage play

This is an offshoot of a thread in the football section.

Suppose one team knocks on, and while you're waiting to see if their opponents gain an advantage, the opposing team commits a foul of a more serious nature, some kind of dangerous play, but not enough to DQ or sin bin. Do you:
  1. rule no advantage, go back to the knock-on and just warn the other player;
  2. ignore the knock-on, and award the penalty kick at the spot of the dangerous play;
  3. go back to the spot of the knock-on, and award the penalty for dangerous play there; or
  4. something else?
Would you do the same thing if the original infraction were not an accidental knock-on but a non-dangerous obstruction?

Confused

I'm a bit confused by the wording of your question. Team A knocks-on. Team B has advantage. Who commits 2nd foul? Team A or B? If Team A commits both infringements then continue advantage (Law 8.5a). If two different sides commit infringements then referee applies sanctions associated with first infringement (Law 8.5b).

Thanks. I hadn't been aware that there's now 8.5(b) to handle that explicitly. Used to be refs in that case would just rule "no advantage" and it would come out that way anyway.

Were you at CanAm this weekend? Saw lots of great rugby and some interesting non-calls by refs. For example, "not in straights" on line-outs were almost never called at all levels of play, similarly, I didn't see too many "hands in" in rucks called. Strange.

No, I'm not getting out much while I heal from plantar wart surgery, including one big one. Almost done. I only strongly considered going to Saranac Lake one year, 1998. In the last 6 years I've developed a highway driving phobia too.
