Given this fact, however, you might conclude that GK interference with possession is ALSO given lateral to the goal. But they wrote in 6-2.3 that situation is also a free clear. So, the 7.3 wording should read "...except when the ball is to be awarded at the center line as defined in other rules". That would alert readers to look for exceptions. Or, they should include it in the exceptions listed below 7-3.
Oh, yeah. But the rules are notorious for having exceptions in ARs that aren't noted in the rule itself. This is one of the reasons I hate the NFHS rulebook, which hides the ARs in the back. I pointed some of these exceptions out to the NCAA rules committee.

For example, there's a rule that says essentially that an airborne player is considered to be where he took off from, so that a player jumping from zone 2 to zone 1 is considered to be in Zone 2 if he catches the ball in the air; thus, if he lands in zone 1 he may ba called for illegal reentry into zone . However, an airborne player in zone 4 is NOT considered to be in zone 4 for the purposes of ending an offensive 10-second count).

Unfortunately, you'll have to get used to keeping track of the exceptions in your head, or in special notes (you should see my rulebook; there's red pen on almost every page!).

Originally posted by CoachRob As for the GK issue, I guess the ref did something wrong in allowing us to do that. We have only one set of GK pads, and the change would have taken too long. NFHS allows one minute for warm up, but it takes longer than that. [/B]
The NCAA wording is

Rule 6-6
A.R. 31. Goalkeeper B1 leaves the field of play due to an injury or a penalty. Should the 20-second delay-of-game be strictly adhered to? RULING: No. When a substitute goalkeeper is involved, the officials shall be reasonably lenient. If Team B wishes to warm up goalkeeper, it must call a timeout.

Originally posted by CoachRob I also don't see that you MUST have a GK on the field. Under 4-4.2, they define who can move where when you are a man down. They do NOT specify you need to have a GK on the field that I am aware of. I'll post this question on the NFHS forum to see if anybody has a reference. [/B]
NCAA Rule 1-18
There must be a goalkeeper on the field who is properly equipped with a chest protector, throat protector and a crosse that is 10 to 12 inches wide and 40 to 72 inches long.

Originally posted by CoachRob As for replacing the replacement GK, can't you do it at ANY substitution, not just a time out or end of period? Why would a GK sub be different than any other type of substitution? [/B]
Because you only have one set of goalie equipment!

Sure, you can sub a goalie on the fly if both guys are dressed. However, if there's only one set of equipment, while the equipment was off the field you'd be in violation of NCAA Rule 1-18 and subject to a rule 6-6 illegal procedure call:

w. Failure to have a properly equipped designated goalkeeper on the field of play.

The only other way I can think to pull it off (other than between periods or when there's a timeout) is to have the original goalie strip down and be ready to receive his gear. Then wait for a sideline out of bounds and call for a horn. Have your goalie sprint. When the 20 seconds for the sideline horn are just about up, inform the official that you want an equipment check on a player from the other team. Make sure it is the player farthest from the officials. Switch the gear and get him back on the field before the equipment check iis done.

That's not a bad use of your free equipment check, since most of the time you don't use it anyway.
