I am a first year umpire curious as to what most of the veterans would say to someone, like myself, who is considering becoming an official to more than one sport? (one at a time, of course)
Having played alot of sports and with kids that do too, I have developed an interest in doing this sort of thing more and more.
Thoughts, advise, pre-cautions please reply.

Talking

I thought the same thing and was going to be an official in a winter then a summer sport .
Personally for me it came to a several points
a Time for my wife/ family in the off season
b How far I wanted to go as an official
c Officiating took a lot of time
d Training in the off season still takes time
e The need to re-charge the batteres

It came to me thinking I want to be the best as I can and to do that it takes all year just for one sport

I officiate basketball and football.

Now the football season overlaps the beginning of the basketball season, and this posed a problem. I had to make a choice as to which sport is more important to me. You will have to do the same. I chose football because advancement will come faster, and I love doing it, although I love doing basketball too.

But getting back to the topic, it's do-able, I've been doing it for 3 years now, and I love it.

Although there were weekends where I'd have 2 basketball games on friday, 6 more on saturday, 2 on sunday and then after those two go do a triple header of football games. Let's just say that it's hard to walk after weekends like those

Shouldn't be a problem. Just consider what debeau said since these sports run back-to-back, pretty much. You might have a month or so after basketball. Good luck!

Most of the better officials I know are multiple sport officials. Now that does not mean it is automatic that you will have success or be a good official at all. I have just found that the skills it takes to be a good baseball umpire are the same skills it takes to be a good football, basketball or softball umpire as well (or just plug in any sport). At the end of the day officials are basically dealing with people. Of course we need to know the rules and mechanics, but the good officials know how to manage people and the game most of all.

Peace

It is over about a 6 year period (or soon to be). I do not even know if I am still in the top 5 of posters anymore. There used to be a list.

Peace
