Sent Private Messages Not Visible

I can send private messages to other users and see messages I have received from other people. However, when I try to see if my private messages got sent, and look at private messages that I did send, the Sent Items folder shows 0 messages. Does this mean that my PM was not sent, or is this because sent messages automatically get deleted from the sender's Sent Items folder? It is confusing, because I (and other users) might mistakenly send the same message 2 or 3 times, not knowing if it actually reached its intended recipient. Is there a way to fix this glitch?

Problem is, it still hasn't been addressed today. Who is responsible for PMs? AFAIK, the moderators are only responsible for making sure that people don't kill each other in the threads, warning/banning offenders, and closing threads that have turned irrelevant or where users flame each other.
