Help with a situation

A attempt a two-point try attempt from the B-3 after time had expired in the second quarter. (Clock at 0:00). A11 runs a sweep and advances to the B-2. He is forced to retreat to the B-6 and eventually throws a forward pass from the B-6 to tight end A88 who catches the pass in the end zone. What is the result of the play? I think that we as a crew got it wrong, because the wing's threw a flag for an illegal forward pass and we said that the 2pt try was no good.

NF High school this should have been ruled a legal forward pass and a successful 2 point conversion. Rule 7-5-2 describes the criteria for illegal forward passes which includes a pass from beyond the neutral zone.

There is no specfic case book play of your situaiton in the NF case book. However, in the Redding Study guide page 39 commentary says this "Notice, a forward pass is legal if it is thrown from in our behind the NZ, so it does not matter if a runner advances the ball beyond the zone and then returns. Also, if the runner crosses the NZ and then flips the ball back to a teammate behind the zone who throws a forward pass, that pass is also legal."

Your call would be correct under NCAA and not correct under Fed.

REPLY: Just be aware that plays like this (planned runs that turn into passes) will likely result in ineligibles being downfield.

....and unlike the passer, if they retreat after being down field, they are still considered down field.

But I don't think that's likely when the spot is the defending team's 3 yard line.
