Is a PF An Automatic First Down?

3rd and 20 due to a holding call. Next play results in a personal foul against the defense . 15 yards marked off but it's still short of the first down. 4th down or 1st down due to the personal foul?

For NFHS, no, it's not automatic (for garden variety PF).

Thanks for the response. What would be a non-"garden variety" PF that would result in a 1st down?

Anything that starts with "roughing."

Late hit after the whistle on a non-ball carrier? No automatic first?

I ask because I heard it mentioned on a broadcast. Just curious.

No AFD.

The only fouls that carry an AFD in the NFHS code are roughing the passer, roughing the kicker, and roughing the snapper.

NCAA is different: were you watching/listening to a game played under NFHS rules? Some HS games are not.

Also: broadcasters are not a reliable source regarding rulings or rules.

This is why you do not listen to broadcasters for rules knowledge.

Peace
