Is a PF An Automatic First Down?
3rd and 20 due to a holding call. Next play results in a personal foul against the defense . 15 yards marked off but it's still short of the first down. 4th down or 1st down due to the personal foul?

Late hit after the whistle on a non-ball carrier? No automatic first?
I ask because I heard it mentioned on a broadcast. Just curious. |

The only fouls that carry an AFD in the NFHS code are roughing the passer, roughing the kicker, and roughing the snapper. |

NCAA is different: were you watching/listening to a game played under NFHS rules? Some HS games are not.
Also: broadcasters are not a reliable source regarding rulings or rules. ![]()

One the way home from a game last year, and listening to a radio guy say the following. "Block below the waist on the defense! That's impossible, the defense can't do that. These guys are horrible. I just don't understand where they get these guys"
Just so happens our crew was from the town he does radio for. We called him and told him that it was possible. Defensive back came up to try and play a sweep, and cut the offensive lineman at the knees. |
