MNF game

Didn't see that call in question but a friend asked me about the "incorrectly enforced intentional grounding" play (their words). They explained what they thought happened but given they're not an official and were looking to me for advice I wanted to see if anyone here knew what happened.

There was a grounding call that was enforced 10 yards, repeat the down. I did not see the action though.

1-10-WAS 30 (15:00) 10-E.Manning pass incomplete deep left. PENALTY on NYG-10-E.Manning, Intentional Grounding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 30.

2-20-WAS 40 (14:55) 10-E.Manning pass short middle to 44-A.Bradshaw to WAS 31 for 9 yards (59-L.Fletcher, 96-B.Cofield).

From a simple enforcement, this is correct...intentional grounding in the NFL is a 10 yard if the throw is within 10 yards. IF it's more than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, then the penalty is enforced from the spot of the throw. All this is coupled with a loss of down.

So they did enforce the LOD? My friend said they didn't. She said it was replay 2nd down (and 20).

I think the R incorrectly announced repeat the down rather than loss of down.

I saw only enough of the game to hear the R enforce a grounding call once, and in that mic work, the R definitely said "repeat the down". The play by play at NFL.com only shows 1 grounding call all night, so this had to be it.

Which means that the R goofed on the mic. I didn't hear a correction, but that doesn't mean he didn't give one, as I was studying at the time and was only partially paying attention to the game.

I'm rather surprised that an NFL Referee would botch this enforcement.

Me too - that's why I asked it the enforcement was actually wrong (as opposed to maybe just the announcement like was mentioned).

He didn't botch the enforcement. The IG happened on 1st down. The next play was 2nd and 20.

He DID botch the announcement, however.

Ooops, my bad. Thanks for the correction.

He also then botched not correcting his own announcement. Could be on him, or the crew; I'm not sure about what the NFL feels about that situation.

Eh, I don't know. I'm not sure you want him correcting that particular announcement. He said, "Repeat 2nd down". Do you want him to stop things just to say, "oh, sorry bout that. The previous play was first down, and the penalty carried a Loss of Down, so it's still 2nd down. Well, err... not STILL 2nd down, but it's NOW 2nd down... err.... you know what I mean, right?"

I think he said "repeat the down". Since the graphic previously indicated 1st down, they still think it's 1st down.

If he said "repeat 2nd down", then not only did he screw up the announcement, he screwed up (in his head) the enforcement for that foul, and what down the previous play was.

"Correction on the down, the intentional grounding penalty carries with it a loss of down. The down is now (insert down here)."
