I saw your free kick play on another board, and rather than register with that board, I thought I'd take it up here. We had that exact same play this year and myself and another official discussed it for about a week. I assume your kick was never grounded. I (we) ended up with KCI and this is why - (bear with me, I don't have my rule book here) - it would be fine on a scrimmage kick as K can bat towards it's own goal line. However, on a free kick, it must be grounded before K can legally touch it (or possess it if I recall correctly). I'll check my books (this was under NFHS rules?) and get my rules together.
