I think they botched the chop by specifying the "high" block be above the knee rather than above the waist.

could not disagree more strongly with this statement. That block is dangerous any time it occurs on each "side" of the knee....

The change I would have liked here is for it to read below the thighs.

That is too much splitting hairs. Get rid of the block and now we will not have a coach complaining it was not at the thigh or not.

Peace

It appears the rule will be very similar to the college rule with this one exception. NCAA considers low block at the thigh or below while NFHS considers it at the knee or below. I'm fine with either but prefer the thigh.

And I understand that. Just remember HS has fewer officials and in my opinion this block is not even close to appropriate for kids that age.

Peace

Actually its injury potential increases with age and weight of the players. So it's safest with the youngest.

Then what was the point of legalizing the low-low combination? Might as well have left that alone rather than inviting officials to look at that distinction. I think they weren't paying careful att'n to what they were writing.

maybe you misunderstood my original statement. If one block is above the knee the other below, it is dangerous, not from one side or the other like I originally stated. I could agree with the thigh being the cut off point as well, but this is almost exactly like the college rule. I proposed this rule change last year, and was told the reason it didn't pass was that the coaches want the smaller linemen to be able to compete...Just like when the college rule changed slightly, they allowed the low-low as a comprimise to get rid of the high low regarless of timing, order, or location of the players.
