Record of Penalties
My crew began recording the fouls in our game after a taking the advice of more experienced officials. We had the BJ record the type of foul, who threw the flag, OFF/DEF, the # of the offending player and whether or not the penalty was accepted or not.
Now that we have this information what do we do with it? Or put another way what can we learn from this info and how do we analyse it? Just looking for some thoughts. Thanks. |

Your analysis of the data is really limited only by your imagination. The simplest would be to break down the averages over a season. You can do this by position, by team, by quarter, by...well whatever dimension you can think of really.
What you can do though is start picking up trends with a little statistical analysis. Over a year, how many standard deviations between the two wings is there on certain foul calls? If there are several, you may have a problem with the judgment of one of them. If you can compare the numbers to other crews over a season, that can give you an idea of how your crew calls games compared to others.
