It isn't? What's their job, just to talk for 3 hours?

Some of the rules aren't always easy to understand or comprehend if you aren't studying them on a regular basis like good officials do. I would never expect the announcers to know all of the rules or completely understand the ones they do know. I just wish they wouldn't question an official's judgment or rules knowledge. When I watch other sports I know I don't know the rules as well as the guys on the field/court so I assume they know something I don't know. Announcers could do themselves a huge service by thinking the same way. I like how the announcing crew has an official in the booth with them during bowl games to help explain rules or applications.

When they are in a position where they essentially tell people what to think, they'd better know what they're talking about.

People always tell me about calls in games and after they describe it, they always say "The announcer said it was a [good/bad] call." So, the general public values their opinion over the official's, so they'd better get a little more educated.

The general public is stupid.

Exactly. And that's why I wish they wouldn't comment on a call being good or bad since they don't know the rule. The problem is they don't know that they don't know the rules. If we all think back to before we started officiating, we thought we knew the rules too but we really didn't. Many of us were fed the wrong information by announcers.

Not me. They didn't have football on TV when I started.

It isn't their job to know the rules. Their job is to talk with the hopes of making the game more interesting to the viewer and therefore creating higher ratings.
