Horsecollar Rule
Friday night, had a coaching staff hollering for a horsecollar flag on about everything that looked remotely like a horse collar, even the obviously non-horse collar. Similar for you folks? I nipped a couple of the non-calls in the bud by informing the coaches the player didn't reach into the collar as described in the rule.

They were screaming for it last year when it wasn't a rule. Now that the rule is in place we'll hear it on every tackle from behind.

It sure is similar, Ref Ump. I had a player asking for a HC in my last scrimmage Thursday night, until I explained that "he has to actually grab your collar, not just the back of your jersey".
"Oh," he said, and walked back to the huddle. ![]() Last edited by VALJ; Wed Sep 09, 2009 at 12:07pm. |

In our (NCAA -- Texas HS) experience, we actually hear about it less now that it is a rule. I haven't heard a complaint about it all year or even in the latter part of last year. In the previous 2 years, I almost flagged 2 different coaches for yelling about it when it wasn't a rule.

Reason I ask, is it seems like whenever a new rule comes in, there's a little harping for it during the games, but it dies off after the first night or so once everyone realizes how it's supposed to be called. This was the second night of the season and there was more harping about it than the first night. Maybe it was the fact that I was working the other side of the river.

And don't forget, It is not just grab but grab and subsequently bring down. If they grab and let go or if the grab is not the main action in the bring down then we still have nothing.
