Illinois high school football kickoff

what is the rule in illinois for high shcool football as far as the kick off..if a team kicks the ball out of bounds can you have them kick again or MUST you take the ball at the 35 yr line. In other words if a team is afraid of a team's return game can they just kick it out of bounds all night forcing them to start on the 35 with no choices...also what if they kick it OB at the oppents 40 or 45 do they get it there or at the 35..thanks csuram

The three options for the receiving team are:

1. Back kicking team up 5 yards and rekick.
2. Take the ball 25 yards beyond the spot of the kick (if this won't put the ball in the receiving team's end zone).
3. Take the ball where it went out of bouonds.

So the receiving team could keep backing the kicking team up and making them rekick if the wanted.

There is no Rule in Illinois that would be different from the stated rules above.

In youth ball there might be some rules surrounding this but not at the HS level in IL.

BTW, the penalty options for this have been one of the most tinkered-with in the history of football.

There was a time in the NCAA when the option to make them kick again 5 yds. back did not exist, and Spalding's Foot Ball Guide noted (in reporting the reason for the addition of that option) that teams did kick out of bounds deliberately, noting that with practice time being limited, kickoff coverage was sometimes sleighted.

For a while in the 19th Century, the penalty for kicking off out of bounds (which IIRC could not be declined) was to repeat the kickoff at the same spot (center of the field). For the 2nd consecutive offense, the right to kick off went to the other team. If they too kicked off out of bounds twice consecutively, I forgot whether the first team got 1 or 2 chances again, but eventually one team would scrimmage at the spot. Can you imagine the tedium of that ritual?

Eventhough R has 3 options, common sense dictates that you're giving them the best 2 of the 3.

R is not going to want to put the ball in play where it went out, if it goes OB between the GL and R35, nor will they take it at the 35 if it goes OB between the K40 and R35.

Don't give the coach the option that doesn't make any sense.

Two weeks ago we had a team free kick OOB untouched. R chose the 5-yd penalty and re-kick. On the re-kick from the 35, K was flagged for KCI. K player caught the ball before it touched the ground. (First time I've ever seen that.) K re-kicked from the 20 and R returned the KO for a TD.
