One way I have seen work quite well, is having an umpire, L, and FJ triangle.
The U has the R responsibilities, and can generally see any backfield fouls, as well as the holding calls.
Last I checked, this is not in the NFHS officials manual for three-man mechanics, but is effective, because the R does not have to be in an all out sprint to cover the sideline away from the linesman.
If you know the other officials you are working with, give them a call, they will help you out on any specific questions.
Better yet, find yourself an experienced official, stay on his hip after the game, ask away. Tell him you are open to any constructive critisim, and mean it.
A mentor help you move from a rules book official to an effective game manager.

Tomorrow is first game, is it easier to start off as a referee, line judge or head linesman. The guys I am working with are both varsity officials so that should help some what.

CANADIAN MECHANIC:

For 3-man, we use R, U, and HL. HL handles the sticks, naturally. The R and U are on the LJ side of the field - and make a large triangle wit the HL. If the spot is on the LJ hash mark, the R lines up a bit wider, as the R also has the open sideline, leaving the U to go back to the goal line.

A neat trick is to rotate the U and HL to LJ and U, respectively, so that you always have a wing on the short side of the field. In this mechanic, the R is also always wide to cover the open sideline.

If you've got 2 varsity officials, I'm sure that you will be fine - as they may operate on auto-pilot for some of the game - allowing them to help you out.

As a rookie, I worked 3- man other day in my first game and didn't go too bad. Worked the sideline and R & U had me cheat in from sideline to better cover field. Did alot of running and spotting though, good workout.
