I think that you should try to be more vocal around the pile. Don't be afraid to talk to the players and do some preventative officiating. It will save you a ton of headaches in the long run. The players are less likely do something stupid if they hear your voice.

I used to do the same thing, and caught an earful working a my first college scrimmage. I hate wearing one but I use a finger whistle now.
