Nebraska. Friday night is our last regular season game, since we're heading into Iowa to do one. Others are either done, or doing playoffs on Thursday or Friday.

Why do they play on Tuesdays?

Illinois.

5 rounds of playoffs begin this weekend. I have a round and that's it.

This was the fastest--and most enjoyable season--yet!

Question for those working playoffs and how your state handles assignments.

When you get your playoff letter/call/assignment; does your state let you know ahead of time how many games or rounds you will work or does it go week by week.

In Iowa we receive our assignments by mail.

Then the waiting game begins.

They call you aand let you know by phone if you have a game for the upcoming round or not.

You may not receive a first round but may work a second round.

Or do a first skip the second then work the third.

Or any number of variations.

I would much rather have them tell you what rounds you will work at the beginning. Why the big secret i have no idea.

MJT what do you think of our system here in iowa

We're just on week 8 of 10 (actually, 11, with "0" week). Then, we have up to 6 weeks of playoffs depending on the league/division.

Jr. high games will end next week for most school districts, with some the week after. Obviously, sub varsity games end 2 weeks from Thursday.

Still a fifth of the season left, plus another half of season of playoffs. It'll be over by Christmas!

Minnesota... Everyone makes the playoffs, 6 classes

first round of sections.... tonight (Tue., Oct. 23)
section semis ... generally Sat.
Section finals .... Generally week from Friday.

8 sections in each class.... officials are assigned by a section coordinator...
assignments for each round in the section are generally known prior to the
season even starting... not specific assignments, but what rounds your crew
will be working. As seeding gets done, specific assignments are given by
the section coordinator. Generally speaking... 2 crews get first round games only,
1 crew gets a first round game and a semi, 1 crew gets all three rounds.

The state assignments for each class are decided early in October by the state
high school league... Here's how I understand that it works....

One first round game in each class is reserved for the crew that will be doing the finals in that class. That leaves three assignments in each class for a first round game.

Semi-final games are given to two of the three crews that worked a first round game the year before.

The final game is given to one of the two crews that worked a semi-final game the year before.

As far as I know every crew is eligible for state after applying except for those crews
that worked a final game the year before... they must sit out one year from state and
then are eligible to work up the ladder.

..... To get your initial first round game, they are use the ratings from the coaches and
an actual evaluation by a state evaluator... ususally a retired official. There is a potential each year for up to 18 new crews to do a first round game. But if they get four new crews that have never done a state tournament game, they consider that to be a very high number.

Nebraska's playoffs are a bit complicated because of the variations in classifications. Class A (the biggest class) started their regular season on Week 0, where some Classes B-D2 schools started theirs the same week. Everybody else started on week 1. Those teams playing on week 0 got a bye week somewhere along the line. Week 8 is actually the last week of the regular season for everyone except for Class B. Class B's regular season ends on week 9, which is the first week of the state playoffs for everyone else.

The playoffs on week 9 are for Classes C1-D2 (32 qualifiers in each class) on Thursday (Oct. 25), and Class A (16 qualifiers) on Friday (Oct. 26). The following Wednesday (Oct. 31), Class B has it's first round games (16 qualifiers) while C1-D2 has it's 2nd round, and then Friday night (Nov. 2), it's Class A's turn with their quarterfinals. Classes B-D2 have their quarterfinals on the Monday after that (Nov. 5). Class A has their semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9, while the other classes have theirs on Saturday, Nov. 10. The state championship games are played in Lincoln on Thursday, Nov. 15 (8 man classes D1 and D2); Friday, November 16 (Classes C-2 and A-I believe that's right), and Saturday, November 17 (Classes C-1 and B-again, I think that's the order).

I don't know how they do assigning of officials for the playoffs, because my crew had applied for 2 years, and we haven't been fortunate enough to get a contract.

In Ohio approximately 15% of the teams make the playoffs among the 6 divisions. Thus, about 15% of the varsity (class 1) officials get assignments. Although we work in crews guring the regular season, playoff assignments are done individually. During week 3 or 4 an official may get a letter that tells him that they have met the criteria for eligibility to be selected as a playoff official. From my experience approx 90% of those getting the letter will receive an assignment. During week 8 those selected get a letter letting them know what crew they will be on. Crews range from 1 to 96. Crews 1 thru 6 get five games including a state championship game. Crews 48 thru 96 get one game. ANd so on. On Sunday after week 10 the internet will show which crew will be where, and the referees receive the info on their crews. I will not meet my crew mates until game night.

MI playoffs start this weekend and run through Thanksgiving weekend. All schools with 6 wins in a 9 game schedule (or 5 in 8) automatically qualify. A point system is then used to fill out the field to 256 teams which are split into 8 divisions of 32. The first three rounds the officials are assigned as crews, semis and finals are individually assigned. I have no idea how anyone is notified as I have never been assigned a game.

That's me as well. First basketball scrimmages are also two Satrudays away. Hard to move to bball mode when you're still working football.
