Some running for the WH

Oh, what an exciting night. 40-yard fumble return for a TD and about a 70 yard INT return for a TD. This WH got a few sprints in tonight.

Anyhow, we had the following. Sort this out.

A scores a TD. B commits a late hit after the TD has been whistled. Before the linesman can get his flag out of his pocket, an A player screams at the linesman looking for a foul and the U flags him for USC. The L does flag the late hit.

Lightbulb Canadian Ruling

CANADIAN RULING:

All fouls are DB, so TD counts.

Penalties are applied in order they're committed. Team A gets first choice to apply 15 yards for UR on KO or ½ the distance on the convert (from 5 to 2½). B then gets to decide where to place the 10 yards for OC: on the KO or on the try.

Possibilities:
  • UR on KO
    • OC on KO
      • KO from the A-50, Convert from the B-5.
    • OC on Convert
      • KO from the B-50, Convert from the B-15.
  • UR on Convert
    • OC on KO
      • KO from the A-35, Convert from the 2½.
    • OC on Convert
      • KO from the A-45, Convert from the 2½.
Edit: added the : after OC

Both are DBFouls and will be enforced in order of occurence. They cannot be enforced on the KO. B's foul takes the try to the 1.5, and A's foul backs it up 15 yards to the 16.5. Sorry team A, but that it the proper enforcement. That just goes to show you that players should not yell at the officials.

On this, should you march off both penalties, or just put it on the 16.5 yard line?

I was actually wearing a microphone last night, so I was able to explain this fairly easily. I told the U to simply put the ball on the 16.5 but to wait until after I was through the announcement.

More fun tonight. Some TV highlights time. Announcer said the weather was perfect....if you were a frog. I've never played through a harder rain and my knickers are in for the second run through the laundry as I type.

Another good one from a varsity coach. 2nd and 10. A14 back to pass and before the pass is thrown, B27 holds a receiver. Pass thrown, 2 flags thrown (BJ/HL), defensive holding.

Coach is screaming: "But the pass wasn't thrown yet!! He can do that!! It's not holding, it's redirecting the receiver!! I'll show you the rule at halftime!!"

Well, it happened again in the second half and the LJ threw that flag.

On top of that, an assistant picked up an USC for swearing at the chain crew when they asked him to move ("I'll stand wherever I ******* want. Don't tell me what to ******* do."). Flag. Linesman's only regret is that he thought maybe he should've tossed the assistant coach.

2 more dates. DH tomorrow night and a playoff game Tuesday night.

Unbelievable.

Had a HC today tell me that a penalty application was wrong because "yards were gained". The play was a punt with R running it back. HS game, and this guy is a veteran teacher/coach. You gotta be kidding me.

It took 5 washings and 4 rinsings (to get all the soap and stain remover out) to get the knickers clean. Worst I've ever seen.

I don't quite get where these coaches get these ideas. The "redirect" guy is a respected coach in the area, yet he honestly believes that until the pass is thrown his defenders have an absolute right to "redirect" receivers downfield.

Personally, as the WH, I threw a grand total of 2 flags and one beanbag last night. The second flag was an easy holding call that got my flag covered in mud.

Hopefully things will be a bit drier tonight.

I have always toyed with this on "offsetting" dead ball fouls. Lacking a microphone, I would have the umpire walk off the first penalty and give the signal. Then have the second penalty walked off and give the second signal.

According to the Officials' Manual these fouls should be walked off separately.

Last season in one of those wonderful youth games with Team A at the 1 yard line, Team B encroached, a wound up tight Team A coach started running on the field complaining and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

We walked off the 1/2 yard penalty to show we saw the encroachment, then the 15 for the unsportsmanlike. To have done any other way would have led to the belief the encroachment was ignored.

Isn't it wonderful what the coache's of today are teaching our youth. It is okay to run onto the field and to protest a call, even tho there is no way a coach could see encroachment from where he is supposed to be.
Way to go coach...
