Confused? What is an offside? There is no such foul, that is announcer talk. If you mean encroachment it is also a dead ball foul in NFHS, and stopped before the play happens. In the original post MJT hit the nail on the head.

There IS offside in NCAA rules. dvasques is using NFL rules and they may have offside also.

Last I checked, NFL had both offsides & encroachment.

"Encroachment" has had a couple of meanings to distinguish it from "offsides" in USAn codes that have both. One type of encroachment is a foul by a player of either A or B who, since the ball was made RFP, was never onside during the interval that ends when the ball is put in play. AIUI (please correct me if I'm wrong), under current NCAA rules that foul should never be called because a delay of game call would intercede.

The other type of encroachment is a foul wherein an offside player makes contact with an opponent or the ball while it is ready for play. NFL has one additional type of encroachment, wherein an offside player of B is on A's side of the neutral zone in a scrimmage situation and advancing "unabated", such that team A would obviously not benefit, other than via the penalty, from being allowed to put the ball in play; it saves them the trouble of snapping the ball and getting their QB smeared to get a 5 yard penalty.

Certain other fouls can be committed by offside players for infractions in or on the other side of the neutral zone, and penalized as illegal procedure -- shifting thru the neutral zone or repeatedly charging into the neutral zone. At least I think those are counted as illegal procedure and not offsides.
