BTW - anyone notice that the R, U and LJ are in long sleeves with the U apparently wearing a jacket while the L is wearing short sleeves?

That is a coach showing his kids great sportsmanship! Those are the times when you really hope the officials know the rule so they can spoil the coaches antics.

I really think that the coaches must have discussed this play with the officials before the game and got their approval. I can't imagine that not one of the 5 wouldn't have blown his whistle when the QB "asked" for the right ball after being handed the "wrong" ball by the center. I say handed because it certainly wasn't a fluid motion. The near official, yes in short sleeves, was too ready to run down the field with the play.

Being that this is a youth game, I'd expect that those officials were relatively new and not fully aware of all the rules. At least that's the way it is around here. The most senior official on youth games around here is usually in his third year, so that can also explain a lot of why these types of plays aren't penalized.

One nice thing around here is that we always have at least one "Active" (roughly fifth-year or up; compare with "Candidate" or "Associate") official on any game, even the lowest-level Pop Warner.

It's not a youth football thing. There was a video of a HS game making the rounds about a year ago. Same exact play. I wouldn't be surprised if the genius coach got the idea from watching that video.
