Question

Forgive my reference numbers here, i need the tutoring on how to reference the rule book. Anyway, Rule 4, Article 2, letter i, states that during a try if b secures possession the play is dead or when it is apparent that the kick has failed it is dead.

My question is about a blocked PAT. Our guys always blow this dead immediately. Is this right. Because once we blocked a kick and their holder could have obviously ran it in for two points, but it was blown dead as he out hustled my guys to the ball. Shouldn't he have been awarded the opportunity to run with the ball since he recovered it behind the neutral zone?

Or is the kick being blocked the same as apparently failed?

thanks.

When the kick is blocked it has obviously failed. My crew uses the whistle immediately after the kick, too

Also, rulebook references can be given as follows.

Rule 4.2.2i

Meaning Rule 4.Section 2. Article 2, Letter i.

Hope this helps.

The kick has failed but the try has not failed until B secures possession. why couldn't K scoop the blocked kick and run it in for 2?

Because it clearly states (in the second OR clause of the rule that you listed in your first post) that the down (try) has ended when it is apparent that the kick has failed. If the kick was grounded, there is no way it can score.

Uh, Mike, that would be 4-2-2i. 4.2.2i would be a Case Book ruling (this year they changed to "Situation I").

But then, you knew that ...

I agree with the kick try ruling. How clear can it be? For us, the BJ whistles as soon as the ball clears the line (that is, as soon as he sees the ball in the air from the kick). The Referee will whistle when it's blocked.

Because when you kicked the ball, you tried to score 1 point. You've made your attempt. You can't now try and score 2 points after the 1 point attempt failed. That's the rule and the philosophy.
