Taunting

Ball on A's 45, 1st and 10. A's legal forward pass is intercepted by B1 on the 50 and returned for a touchdown. During the return, B2 taunts A1, behind B1 at A's 30. How is the non contact, unsportsmanlike penalty enforced?

Just like any other dead ball/non-player foul.

From the succeeding spot. In this case, the try.

If the last play of the game and no try, nothing occurs.

Unfortunately, true. That is one problem that needs to be looked at. It is similar if a team scores the winning TD on a play when they hide the ball under their jersey.

I agree. I'm not arguing the rules, just their common sense, or lack thereof. If B2 would have committed a block in the back during the return, the TD gets called back. But if B2 gets in the QB's face and talks smack, the TD stands and the PAT gets penalized. Doesn't seem right in to me.

It's because it's very possible (even probable) that the BIB had a material effect on the play, giving the return team yardage and/or the TD when they would not have gotten it otherwise. But the taunt did not effect the result of the play, just as other USC's don't. They are penalized afterward - which can be painful for the fouling team ... but they shouldn't nullify the play that happened during the taunt.

There is a big difference. A TD scored by hiding the ball under the jersey will be called back because it is an unfair act and a good official will not allow a team to get 6 points that way. The TD scored with taunting will stand because the interception was fair and legal and B deserves the score, but the stupid behavior needs to be penalized.

Hiding the ball under the jersey is again a personal foul and not USC anymore. This was corrected when the NF posted the Rules and Case Book corrections.

Being stupid is different from illegally gaining an advantage over your opponent.

Warren...

Where are those corrections? I looked on their site --and don't see anything.
I was thinking it was changed from last year --personal and then to USC this year. If it went back to personal - that would be a good thing.
Thanks for your help.

William C: hopefully this link will take you there:

The shaded box on the right hand side should now show a title of "2006 Football Rules Interpretations". Scroll through it.

Saw that later today when I printed them off. Good change.
