illegal motion

I was talking to a buddy at our semi-clinic saturday. he's telling me the illegal motion signal is/has been deleted. Further discussion we discussed how to handle an infraction. For the last 4 years, I have not flagge and whisteled, let play run.Flag it and then deal with it after action ends....what is up????

As far as I know, the signal has not been deleted. Illegal motion is a foul at the snap. Let the play run and give the defense their options after the play is over.

In the 2006 Fed rule book illegal motion is signal # 20.

Its a foul at the snap, flag it and let the play go.

Are you sure he was not thinking of the Illegal Procedure signal which was deleted last year? If is is IM, as stated above, you flag it at the snap and give B their options after the play is over.

The signal used for illegal procedure was not deleted, just the terminology associated with the words illegal procedure was deleted.
S19 is very much alive, when you now use use say the foul by name rather than to lump it under the covers of illegal procedure as in prior years.

I know a referee, that no matter what you told him about the foul (i.e, I have a false start, or an illegal snap, etc) he would always say "Procedure" while rotating his hands as in S19. Call us nit-pickers, but it drove us nuts.

You're right Theisey, I meant the terminology, cuz #19 is used for FS and IF. I also was bothered by officials that would use that for everything. I saw an R call illegal procedure for IM, IS, FS, and IF all in the same game.
