My guess is if you were not on any crew at all you probably wouldn't end up with an assignment. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule. The quarterfinals are chapter assigned where you would have more exceptions due to the number of games and the latter 2 rounds are state assigned (by crew). I mean we had a quarterfinal and I had a fill-in linesman because my HL got hurt a few games ago. The HL we got for the game happened to be on a full-time crew.
