I was curious to see how other states/associations select officials for the playoffs. Is it by observer recommendation? Coaches' ratings? Tenure? Other means?
I got the short of the stick this year and am a little frustrated by it. Just wondering if there is a better system out there.

I'm told it's a combination of things. Ratings by coaches, meetings attendance, evals (if you get them), service to organization (e.g.: JV games worked), being available for games on unscheduled days, time a crew has been together, and the quality of the crew (although subjective I'm certain this has something to do with it).
One other thing...in NJ we're crew-based. So if you're not part of a full-time crew you will not get a playoff assignment. [Edited by ljudge on Nov 13th, 2005 at 01:56 PM] |

My guess is if you were not on any crew at all you probably wouldn't end up with an assignment. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule. The quarterfinals are chapter assigned where you would have more exceptions due to the number of games and the latter 2 rounds are state assigned (by crew). I mean we had a quarterfinal and I had a fill-in linesman because my HL got hurt a few games ago. The HL we got for the game happened to be on a full-time crew.
