I'm in my first year. In a JV game Sat. during a timeout the HC for white comes on to the field to talk with his team and begins throwing F' bombs at them, at least 3 that I heard plus other swear words. I, apparently, was the only one to hear him. I was umpire standing over ball and looked for the HL and he was talking to the WH. Being new I wasn't sure what to do. After the game I asked the WH and he said I should have told the HC to knock off the language.

What suggestions do you all have if that happens again?

Ask him to stop and if you get any flack, give him the yellow bird.

In our association, we are strict on language when anybody other than those in the immediate area can hear the language--regardless of the target of such language. For example, a kid missses a tackle then punches the ground and drops an F-bomb loud enough for the crowd to hear, it's a flag. On the other side, a kid points to his opponent and says "#$@! you, #33!" so only the nearby official hears it--it's a flag.

In your case, I would take into account how loud it was. If anybody outside of the huddle could hear it, I'd flag it. In either case, I'd tell the coach bad language is not to be used, and warn him he could get flagged for it.

One thing about football is that it is sometimes hard to tell who said something. I personally would not be so quick to automatically penalize someone that used bad language. Usually a team gets one time from me with a very firm warning. Then if I hear language after that, I have done everything I can do and it is flag time. That does not mean that will always apply. You just have to be sure a certain player said it and that the words heard by others. I talk to players about other possible infractions. I will talk to them first about this when I can.

Peace

Had an 8th grade game and a kid yelled Fu*kin' F*ggot near the end of the game, wasn't sure who it was but I warned everyone in the huddle and informed the coach. The coach must have demanded who said it because right after the game had ended the kid came and apologized to me. I informed him that he should choose his words more wisely because he could get ejected.

Another way to handle the situation isto simply walk over to the coach and simply state...

"Coach, I don't know who said it, but I swear I heard someone over hear dropping the F-Bomb. I'd appreciate it if you would tell whoever it is to stop it, becuase if I do hear it again and can't identify who it was, the bench will get that USC and that will belong to you. Thanks, I appreciate your help coach."

Ha! I get it, "swear"! Nice!

Sorry, late game last night. As for foul language, coaches, players, or fans, if you hear it put a stop to it. Many of the suggestions here are good. If you know who said it, a simple "Coach, watch the language," or "Clean up the language guys" would be fine. If you bring it to a coach's attention when a player says something 9 times out of 10 that player is either pulled out for a play and spoken to or someone says something to him immediately. There's no place in a HS or below game for foul language.

That holds true for officials too! Worked a game with a guy who cussed on the field, not loud enough for anyone other than me to hear but still shouldn't have happened.
