From what I recall, the rolling fists signal has been eradicated from the fed signals.

What will now be the signal for illegal formation and false start?

REPLY: I think you might have misread it AB...all that's happening is that the reference to an "illegal procedure" foul has been removed from signal 19 and from NF 7-2 PENALTY for articles 1,2, and 3. The signal is still going to be there and we'll still use it for the fouls you mentioned.

Going play havoc with the old timer refs who yell out the words "Pro seed dee ure" for every foul S19 was used for.

Phew. That baby is also my backup for every signal that (momentarily) slips my mind.

Looks like they are following in the footsteps of the NCAA, whcih did away with "illegal procedure" many years ago, and rightly so. Illegal procedure could be any number of things, and didn't really tell you what the foul was. This is an improvement.

The PA announcer will still announce "illegal procedure" when you make the signal after a 6 men on the line call.

Oh well.

You're right, ABoselli; they will. But since we're giving them a signal that can mean a number of different things, they really have no way to know why the flag was thrown -- unless it was really obvious in the first place.

The important thing is to make sure your wings know what the call was so they can explain it to the coaches.

They normally can hear me because I'll say the foul when I signal. Maybe the visitors might need an update as my back is to them and if we're on the far hash, it might not carry.

Then you'll get, "Who wasn't on??"

No idea coach, let me have your play book and I'll try to figure that out with the opposing coach. 8-)

Oh well.

And for about 90% of the fouls that we call.

I still hear PA announcers (not to mention TV announcers) in college games say "illegal procedure" for all "rolling fists" calls.

...and you probably will hear them for years to come. But what you won't hear is a collegiate Referee saying those words mic'd or not.
They verbalize the specific words for the foul while rolling the fists as they are instructed to do.

I was the R in Jr High game last year, we had a flag for only 6 on the line. After I signaled (S19) and moved back into position one of the guards asked me "who moved?".
