A reciever from team A (NFL team) is running with the ball in the open field. Without being touched, he trips and falls, losing the ball as he contacts the ground. A player from team B covers the loose ball. Fumble?

Sure this is a fumble in the NFL. The ground CAN cause a fumble no matter what the announcers say. This may have also been a fumble in NCAA and NF depending on how the player contacted the ground.

In NCAA 4-1-3-b agrees with warrenkicker.
Not the first time the announcers say something that turn out to be less than correct.

I don't know bo-diddly about NFL rules except you have to be down by contact to be down. So it seems pretty obvious to this NFL illiterate that if this tangle foot receiver falls down on his own accord, the ball comes loose, it's a fumble.
NCAA and NF I would rule differently as something other than his hand/foot has probably touched the turf first. |
