REPLY: I remember the plain black stirrups when I first started in the late 70s. However, I only recall the seeng the red flags as a spectator. I seem to recall that one official's flag was white and red. Does anyone else recall that and remember what that was for?

Thumbs up That 70's show...

During my high school playing days during the 1970's the officials used 5 man mechanics, red flags, flags on the corners of the end zone, and only the referee would signal the touchdown. The other officials would just punch out to signal touchdown. And they wore stirrups.

Not sure about the red and white flags... But we did have an official who used to make his own flags from old table cloths... Perhaps that flag was home-made...
