invalid fair catch

PLAY: K kicks and onside kick. The ball hits the ground and bounces high in the air. R-1 gives a fair catch signal a the his 45 and catches the ball. As soon as he makes the catch he is hit by K-1 and fumbles. K-2 recovers at R's 40.

Foul, enforcement options and spot of ball after enforcement?

Well R gets to keep the ball because the ball becomes dead when R catches it.

Then we have 5 yards for the invalid fair catch signal.

This 5 yard penalty would be enforced from the previous spot.

How is this not PSK? 5 yards where the kick ends, which in this case would be where R catches it.

PSK= Post SCRIMMAGE Kick.

I think I blew this call. I awarded R the ball and penalized them five yards. i guess this is just a regular loose ball enforcement. Please tell me otherwise.

You know this Snakeyes.. PSK does not apply for Free Kicks.

R fouled prior to possession, therefore if accepted the foul is from previous spot and replay the down.

A kick is a kick, is a kick, until R gains possession. At that instant it's no longer a kick, it now a running play.

Illegal fair catch, because the ball touched the ground, 5 yards, spot of the foul.

Rule 10-4-5: The basic spot is the succeeding spot:
c. a dead-ball foul

Couldn't you also have a dead ball personal foul for a late hit since the ball becomes dead at R's possession?

I would like nothing better than your analysis. However, what is your basis for calling this a dead ball foul. The signal occured during the down. The catch caused the ball to become dead.
