Hello everyone,

I was the crew chief today for a youth football double header and during the pre-game, one of my co-officials had a good case play that had actually happened to him the week before.

A ball, 1st and 10 from B40. A1 throws the ball downfield, B1 intercepts the pass at B20 (on his feet), the covering official throws a pass interference flag (on B) and blows his whistle (inadvertant).

What do we do?

Enforce the penalty. Ignore the IW, by rule.

Well, if the penalty is accepted (and I don't know why it would not be), the IW is ignored (Rule 4-2-3), and A has the ball back, 1/10 from the B25.

If for some reason the penalty is not accepted, B can choose to accept the result of the pass (1/10 for B at their 20), or they can choose to replay the down, 1/10 for A at the B40. If A chooses to decline the penalty, and B chooses to replay the down, then I would go home.

Walk straight off the field, wouldn't even hold the ball over my head to let them know the game is over.
