On my first crew, one of the wives made bean bags with real beans in them. Upon washing it the first time, the beans swelled up and the bag was hard as a rock!

If your making your own, while at the fabric store, try plastic or metal beads that are sold at most of them. Think the smaller sizes work best, but get an idea of weight and volume.
