A 4/10 B35. A tries a field goal which is very short. The ball comes to rest, untouched by either team at the B2. After a short time, the L blows the ball dead since neither team attempts to recover?

B 1/10 at the B2?

Thanks
UE

Lets see, we have free kicks and scrimmage kicks. This is a scrimmage kick, not a try (to eliminate that scenario. treat it as a scrimmage kick, therefore we don't care how they have kicked the ball. So at the 2.

Correct. There ball did not break the plane of the goal, so no touchback. MFGs in HS are not returned to the previous spot, rather, are treated just like any scrimmage kick.

NFHS:
A scrimmage kick, is a scrimmage kick, is a scrimmage kick.

All you have to do is remember this:

The ONLY rules difference between a placekick, dropkick or punt, is that if a legal place kick or dropkick goes through the uprights its 3 points----that's it.

Believe me, keep this in mind, and it will save you if you ever become confused about ball placement, penalty enforcement ect.

Hope that helps.
