Unless he doesn't want to use the box, in which case he can sit anywhere on the designated bench.

Vandy

Vandy for years has elected to have the benches off the endline. I've never noticed, but I don't recall any restriction for the coaches in this setting. Is there any?

I have never had a coach refuse to use the coaches box. I have had my U1 tell the coach he needs to get in the box before I toss the ball.

I was going to ask that same question Chris.I can't imagine the coaches being allowed to roam the entire baseline in that setup.

"Coach, if you're going to use it, you'll need to start the game within the box."

I've never had to address this, but I'm not going to issue a directive that isn't supported by rule. I'll give him the choices that are provided in the case play.

I have never enforced this and doubt any of the refs around here would back me up if I tried to.

"Sorry coach you can't stand up cuz you started the game sitting outside the coaching box.'' Yeah that'll go over well.

Not me either but I have heard of one or two officials who make an issue over it.

Sometimes you need to know the rules in order to know when you're not enforcing one.

I do remember back in the day of the 6 foot box a coach who always put his chair in the middle of it before the game started. He told me once an official had enforced that rule and he'd never made that mistake since.

I recall several years ago when Tubby was till at Kentucky seeing him standing on the end line, a few steps off the sideline coaching.

Coaches are rarely sitting down at the tip to even know where they will be sitting. And if they are sitting, it's probably to going to be a blowout so your probably not going to have any issues anyways.

I have attended one game there as a fan about 10 years ago. Throughout the game, I noticed that when the ball went to the other end, Kevin Stallings would regularly come out to about the free throw line. He never interfered with the game as he always bailed when possession changed. The opposing coach did no such thing.

I don't know if Stallings coming out was something no one noticed (since obviously the ref's backs were to him) or if it was something they agree on in pregame due to the unique setup there.
