Simple FT question
The dance: On a FT, offensive center lines up, defensive center moves to his side to block him out. Offensive center switches. Defensive center switches. Rinse, repeat.
Who wins the dance? I have a vague recollection the officials tell the defender to pick his spot and then the offensive player gets to pick, but I don't know if its real or something I was just told by a ref somewhere along the line. |

I give the defense the last move.
Do I have a citation? No. The team shooting free throws is being given the opportunity to score points, so I feel the defense should have the opportunity to choose how it wants to defend.

Thanks. I guess that means from a coaching perspective, I tell my kids to try to get what they want at both ends until a ref tells them otherwise. (My son's MS team that I help coach has only one big -- who is very tall for the age.)
(I find it interesting that there is no rule on this as it woudl be simple to write -- I remember that dance being an issue in HS back in the dark ages when I played, but usually only when the defensive team only had one true "big" - which is excactly the case for my son's team. So I suppose the reason there is no rule is it's not so much of a varsity level issue, which I expect spurs most of the interest in changing rules.) |
