Early in my career this happened a few times. I remember it happen twice in one game. I have not seen it much at all since.

Peace

I had this happen once this year. BMS on a layup attempt. Player laid it up real soft and it just stayed on the flange. Tried to get a cheer leader to jump up and knock it off of the flange, but she declined. Had a fan come out of the stands and he knocked it off. No I did not issue a technical foul on the fan for coming out on the court. I actually thanked him for his service!

We had one the other night.

Someone retrieved a ball to knock it off and I handed it to a player to do the honors. A man's got to know his limitations, especially in front of 1000 or so of his "closest friends." Besides, I don't think it looks all that dignified for the official to do something like this while everyone is watching -- I feel the same about an official that chases after a loose ball, too.

Those are our instructions, too, be it resting or wedged between glass and ring. I also had my first such rest this year, and I forgot said instruction and handled it myself.
