Wink Three Seconds

Some clarification on 3 in the key please, is player control needed (by a player inside the key or a teammate outside the key)?

There is team control during an interrupted dribble but not player control. I ask this because I came across the contradicting statements below:

Statement 1 - An interrupted dribble occurs when the ball is loose after deflecting off the dribbler or after it momentarily gets away from the dribbler. During an interrupted dribble, a three-second-lane violation, a player-control foul and acknowledgment of a timeout request cannot occur.

Statement 2 - A player shall not remain in the opponents' restricted area for more than three consecutive seconds while his team is in control of a live ball in the frontcourt and the game clock is running

The first of your two statements is false. Whether this should be called is another question.

Only the last portion of the first statement is true as far as what cannot be called.

FSG, what's your point?

I had a coach erupt on me because I had a player ( 5'2" tall,) dribble into the lane, get trapped, ( by 3 players on the defense that were 6' tall ) try to pass the ball out of the lane, finally passed the ball out and had a hard time getting out of the lane due to the 3 defensive players.

Coach wanted 3 seconds, I passed on it, no advantage in my opinion in calling that.

He went to my former interpreter and my interpreter came to me and said I HAVE to make that call. 3 seconds is 3 seconds no exception.

IIRC, #1 used to be true (there was once an exception for an interrupted dribble) but the rule was changed to only depend on team control in the frontcourt.

Where did you come across these statements? 4-15-6 does NOT contain the "3-seconds" clause you have, and contains two other items not on your list.

I think he saw them in a coaches manual in the same section that describes over-the-backs and reaches.

4-15 ART. 5

An interrupted dribble occurs when the ball is loose after deflecting off the dribbler or after it momentarily gets away from the dribbler. There is no player control during an interrupted dribble.

4-15 ART. 6

During an interrupted dribble:

a. A closely guarded count shall not be started or shall be terminated.

b. A player-control foul cannot be committed.

c. A time-out request shall not be granted.

d. Out-of-bounds violation does not apply on the player involved in the interrupted dribble.

Sorry, I meant Statement 1 (even though Statement 2 is not directly from the rule you cite, I recognize it as "close enough")

Since team control still exists, theoretically, three seconds can still be called, and a team control foul can still be charged to any player on the offense, including the interrupted dribbler.
