If the coach was already warned, he'd likely whack. JR didn't believe in multiple warnings.

I would add another option for me at least. Confront the coach about the comment directly if you are standing right there. I guess that is warning, but if I did not have to yell I would likely say something.

Peace

It's like a lot of other comments, as much how it was said as what was actually said. If it's directed at nobody in particular, just musing aloud to oneself, I'd probably ignore it. (the same tone as a person saying "Oh, no! I can't believe it's raining again.) If it was in an angry tone obviously directed at me, it could be worth a whack.

Exclamation

I had a coach yell that at me once. Of course, this guy was my partner. D'oh!

True...OP did say that the official was running past the bench when it was said, so that's not really an option at the moment. Next dead ball maybe, or when we come back down to his end. Personally not a big fan of ignoring comments like that from a coach...so I would either warn or whack.

I'm likely to stick him. If not, the warning would be extremely clear.

The coach says the team is getting homered?

Whackerooni. No doubt. He's calling your INTEGRITY into question.

"Coach, I'll be glad to answer your question about a call, but I will not put up with any further comments along those lines."

(assuming nothing has been said so far, and the coach has been reasonably well behaved)

That's the answer that matched this scenario....NO DOUBT....

Homered=Cheating...in my book. Whack!

And we did discuss it after the game over refreshments...but, there wasn't any laughing about it. A Coach tells me our crew is cheating...I don't take that lightly. Integrity is all we have, at the end of the day.

I will say the Coach had some class when asked by a reporter what happened...he said it wasn't the officials fault he lost, he said his team just didn't play good defense and they weren't shooting well.

I have been having a hard time with the whole technical foul thing. I really like who almost all of you decide whether to give a T or not. It is really just business, no hard feelings, no skin off your back, it helps improve the game. It really seems as if most of the guys in my association are too frugal with them and hardly ever give them at. 1-2 per year if that. I know the coaches and players aren't that well behaved. I really feel like if I were to give a T for the above comment, I don't know that my association would agree with me. I think it is totally justified. Does anyone else have this issue with their association?

Everyone who is newer (and I apologize if my impression is incorrect) struggles with this issue.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you with an answer/comment. I've been kind of busy this week-end and have not had a chance to check in here...

In regards to the T given to the Coach for his comment in the OP...

an up and coming official e-mailed me the day after and said he was sitting with our assigner at the game.

He stated that our assigner told him, just 1 minute prior to my T, that the coach was going to get whacked.

So... to answer your question...no issues in this part of Rome.

Edit: I realize that our assignor could not have heard the comment...so he was talking about behavior...So, with the coaches behavior AND the comment I'm glad I did not let him slide. I must say that personally I had not really had a problem with the coach...so it must have been a sort of sense I had that he needed to get whacked.

I had this happen over Christmas. An out of town coach was saying something - basically that we were cheating for a Vegas team. I addressed it immediately and the coach thought he should have a parting shot by repeating a variation of the same. Technical foul.

I wonder who that coach was? Hmmmmmmmmmm

BTW, that same coach got stuck in a Christmas tournament here too for a similar comment. Well that is if we are talking about the same guy. I wonder who that would be?

Peace
