I'd gently suggest asking someone in the medical and or PT profession. "MCL problem" is way too vague to get any kind of answer, and even if you were more specific it's going to depend on the individual involved.

I remember spraining/straining my MCL while running a 5k back in my early 30's. My leg wouldn't bend w/o pain for 2/3 weeks. It sucked. I can't imagine messing it up bad enough to require surgery.

Several years ago, I tore my ACL and MCL along with a lot of other things in my knee. I had surgery, they didn't touch the MCL. According to my doctor, the MCL gets a plentiful blood supply with the necessary elements to heal while the ACL gets little to no blood flow and will not heal on its own. The doctor's opinion was that the MCL would actually heal faster and better naturally than with surgery.
That has been almost 10 years so things certainly may have changed, but that is my experience.

Generally, surgery is not required for an MCL unless it is completely torn -- I have had bad strains (i.e. partial tears) three times in my left knee. None of them required surgery. If you need surgery to repair your MCL with no other injury (i.e. no other ligament and no meniscus tear), I would guess you are going to be out 4 to 6 weeks -- perhaps a bit longer.
In the case of my MCL injuries, I was immobilized for six weeks for the first one (over 30 years ago), and placed in a brace with mobility and PT for about four or five weeks for my other two. Good luck!!! |

I did 10 weeks ago - the single Synvisc injection. Giant needle, but it's like a brand new knee.
